Netherford Road - Full House Refurbishment & Extension
Project Information
This project, a full house refurbishment and extension, had been a long-standing ambition for our clients. When we were appointed in 2018, we went through a detailed briefing process with them, led in part by the photos and magazine clippings that they had been diligently accumulating over the years.
Images of rooms, gardens, doors, furniture, wall colours, light switches & antiques were reviewed and discussed, which built a clear image of what the project should look and feel like.
The design grew out of these images and was finessed in line with the practical requirements of the brief. A ground floor, side extension makes space for a larger kitchen and downstairs WC, and a mansard loft addition creates a new bedroom suite on the top floor.
A photograph of a Geneva greenhouse from Samuel Zeller’s ‘Botanical’ became a central inspiration for the design of the ground floor extension. Conceived as lightweight addition to the house, the extension is predominantly glazed and the steelwork is coloured green. An inbuilt bench sits against a large hinged window, allowing the dining table to be opened up to the garden. A continuous floor surface from patio to kitchen enhances this indoor / outdoor feel.
Throughout, the interior is sympathetic to the Victorian heritage, whilst introducing some beautiful reclaimed and handmade finishes and some bold splashes of colour. The result is a unique and character-filled home, and an emphatic realisation of our client’s initial vision.
